Dorm Room Design for the Outdoor Lover

Dorm rooms can be a drag. Limited space, built in furniture, and some outdated designs can buzz kill your outdoor loving spirit. Here are some easy and affordable ways to make your soul smile while living the dorm lifestyle.

1. Rad Pillows

Society 6 has hundreds of decorative pillows to choose from (seriously, there are 90 pages on their website!) Add pillows to your bed with mountain scenes, art, animals and anything else your little heart desires. Save money by buying one pillow and multiple pillow cases to switch out so you never get bored.

2. Plants

Seems obvious enough, but indoor/house plants are an awesome idea to bring good vibes into your space. Looking at nature has been proven to give us a calming affect, and adding live plants to your dorm will take out some of the harmful crap in the air, like carbon dioxide and toxins caused by electronics. Succulents are good if you live in the South West. If you don't get loads of sun in your space, try the Heartleaf Philodendron or a Parlor Palm.

3. Display your surfboards and save space

Most ceilings aren't higher than 8 feet, and there's pretty much zero space to stash gear in dorm rooms. The solution is a surfboard wall rack. Store and display your boards on the wall to keep them safe and out of the way.

4. Nature sounds at night

Noise machines are a crafty way to drown out the mid week partiers, non-stop talkers and whatever else happens to be going on at the hour. Many of them include nature sounds like crashing waves, grasshoppers and birds. Not only is this awesome for sleeping, but when you need some peace while studying. Plus anywhere you take it sounds like you're beach front!

5. Himalayan Salt Lamp

They cleanse the air and help prevent allergies and coughing. Himalayan pink salt lamps produce negative ions that neutralize the air, from the majority of positive ions in the air that make it harder to breathe and sleep.
