It Runs In The Blood: Surfing Families
It's a true gift to be able to surf since a young age. And surfers who were lucky enough to have a sibling to paddle out with rack up the hours spent in the water and make them a better surfer. Others grew up with their parents teaching them to surf and inherited their talent and style. Here are some women who grew up in a surfing family and rip like their Ohana. Watch the videos to learn about their stories.
Coco Ho + Ohana
The Ho family is well-known in Hawai'i and in the surfing community. Professional surfer Coco Ho's brother Mason also competes on the World Surf League Tour. Their father Michael Ho and his brother Derek Ho are legendary for riding Pipeline and charging other big, powerful waves in Hawai'i.
Tyler Wright and her brothers Owen and Mikey Wright
Three siblings all competing on the WSL is nearly unheard of. But that's the case with the Wright family, who is always seen gathering in support at the contests. Tyler is a two-time world champion surfer, while her brother Owen is always exciting to watch and is a top contender on the men's side. Mikey has started to make waves on the 'QS and we're stoked to watch them cheer each other on.
Kelia "Sister" Moniz + Ohana
Another Hawaiian family full of surfing siblings. Professional longboard surfer and Roxy model Kelia Moniz got her nickname "Sister" for being the sole female sibling in a family of boys (four!). Her brothers also compete and everyone rips.
Malia Ward and her Rad Dad Chris Ward
Malia Ward's personality is as big and beautiful as her curly hair. Her father Chris "Wardo" Ward competed on the ASP World Tour from 2005-2009. During that time, while still super young and constantly on the road, he had his daughter Malia. She grew up around the ocean and is a talented surfer in her own right.
